How are these 12-step groups different from Rational Recovery, Men/Women for Sobriety, etc.? This is an in-depth look at the twelve steps of the recovery process one must go through to overcome addiction. AA and other self-help groups will be explored
Secular Alternatives to Traditional Self-help Groups

What do you do when clients don’t believe in a higher power? Where can they go for help and support? Secular healing focuses on making positive choices and accepting personal responsibility for actions rather than relying on the supernatural or religious experiences to assist the recovery process. Participants will explore the philosophy and principles of secular alternative self-help groups such as Secular Organization of Sobriety, Rational Recovery, and Men/Women for Sobriety.
An Overview of Family and Addiction Issues

Alcoholism is a family disease. When treating it, several questions come to mind. What is a family? How many different types of families are there? What are some of the critical issues families need to address? What are the strategies that should be used in treating families? How do we treat children of alcoholics, children of substance abusers and addicted children? All of these topics will be explored and discussed.
Working with Aging Populations
November 4 & 5, 2008 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

It is inevitable that we will get older. What does the normal aging process look like? This two-day training will provide information, skill building, and experiential training to chemical dependency professionals in order to familiarize counselors with issues of aging and substance abuse. Participants will learn to differentiate signs and symptoms of normal aging, illness, and substance abuse. It will also cover assessment and treatment strategies specific to older adults, as well as examining the counselor’s own values and attitudes about aging.
Working with Resistant Violent Clients
December 2 & 3, 2008 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Social workers and counselors are more apt to be assaulted than any other profession. How do we de-escalate an explosive situation? This two day training will help treatment professionals understand and develop the clinical skills to accurately assess resistance and escalation of violence. Participants will also learn to institute safety plans to protect both staff and clients. |
